Strategic Planning sessions can go sideways before, during, or after the workshop. Here is my list of what makes a successful session:

  • Before
    • having the optimal number and mix of participants
    • budgeting for an appropriate session length 
  • During 
    • having a session that can be easily understood by all participants
    • ensuring the strategic plan is not confused with a strategic marketing plan
    • ensuring that every participant has clear roles and responsibilities (i.e. does everyone have an equal vote or are some present  for input and information sharing only?)
    • ensuring an optimal combination of traditional and creative processes are used
  • After
    • operationalizing the strategic directions into manageable projects
    • Systematically executing the action plans
